We are located in an International Dark Sky Preserve, Bortle Class 2

Dark skies are important for a variety of reasons: their impact on human health, maintaining the rhythm of ecological systems, and the furthering of scientific research. Light pollution, caused by artificial light at night, disrupts these processes, affecting wildlife, human well-being, and our connection to the cosmos.

Impact on Wildlife:

NAVIGATION:

Many animals, including birds, bats, and insects, rely on the stars and natural light patterns for navigation, mating, and hunting. Artificial light can disrupt these processes, leading to misdirection and energy depletion.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS:

Light pollution can interfere with the natural day-night cycles of animals, affecting their sleep, hormone production, and overall health.

ECOLOGICAL DISRUPTIONS:

Light pollution can alter the balance of ecosystems by attracting or repelling certain species, affecting food chains, and disrupting mating and migration patterns.

Impact on Human Health and Well-being:

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISRUPTION:

Exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt human circadian rhythms, impacting sleep, hormone production, and potentially leading to health issues like sleep disorders, depression, and increased risk of chronic diseases.

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT

Excessive light can create glare, reducing visual acuity, especially for elderly individuals.

LOSS OF CONNECTION TO NATURE:

Light pollution obscures the night sky, diminishing our ability to connect with the cosmos and potentially impacting our mental and emotional well-being.

Impact on Scientific Research:

ASTRONOMY:

Sky glow from artificial lights hinders the ability to observe celestial objects, making it difficult for astronomers to conduct research and study the universe.

ECOLOGY:

Dark skies are essential for studying nocturnal behaviors and monitoring the effects of light pollution on wildlife.

Other Considerations:

ENERGY WASTE:

Much of the energy used for outdoor lighting is wasted due to inefficient fixtures and poorly aimed lights.

CULTURAL HERITAGE:

The night sky is a source of wonder, inspiration, and cultural heritage, and its obscuration by light pollution diminishes our connection to the past and our understanding of the universe.
